Emma Reakes and
Kylee Knight led the Saints as the plate on Sunday afternoon, but softball fell 6-4, 8-1 to Rochester in its final Liberty League games of the 2016 season to finish 3-9 in conference on the year. The Saints, now 14-21 overall, will finish the season with a nonconference doubleheader at Elmira on Tuesday afternoon.
Emma Reakes was 3-for-4 in game one against the Yellowjackets; the only Saint to record a multi-hit game in the loss. Pitchers
Emma Gailey and
Allie Courtwright combined for four strikeouts – two each – on the mound, while Gailey was the pitcher of record, allowing five runs on seven hits in the loss. Only one of Rochester's six game-one runs was earned.
The 'Jackets had built a 6-0 lead through four innings before the Saints put four across in the top of the fifth to cut the deficit to two runs.
With two outs and a runner on, Knight singled through the right side and both she and
Carly Dziekan moved into scoring position on a wild pitch before first-year
Elle Gray worked a walk to load the bases.
Mylea Mann reached on a fielding error by the Rochester centerfielder that allowed all three runners to score to make it 6-3 in favor of the home team.
In the next St. Lawrence at bat, Reakes singled to right field and Mann came around as the Saints' fourth run on another fielding error by Rochester.
The Saints would put the potential tying runs on bases in the sixth inning, but weren't able to complete the comeback.
In game two, it was Knight who recorded a multi-hit game. She led off the first inning with a double to right center, advanced to third on a groundout by Gray and came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Mann for a 1-0 St. Lawrence lead.
But that would be all the Saints would get against the Yellowjackets in the nightcap, as Rochester tied the game in the third and took the lead for good with a four-run fourth inning en route to the 8-1 win.
Gailey and Courtwright once again split time on the mound, with Courtwright factoring into the decision in game two. She allowed five runs on three hits in the loss.
