Saints Fall to Nation’s Top Team in Cortland

Kyle MacDonald and Evan Reichel had three hits each to lead the St. Lawrence University Baseball team offense but the Saints surrendered 12 runs early as SUNY Cortland, ranked No. 1 in the country, scored a 12-6 decision Saturday afternoon on Bob Wallace Field in Cortland.

The Red Dragons (34-5) scored three times in each of the first three innings to take an early lead and added on two more in the fourth and one in the fifth for the 12-0 lead.

St. Lawrence (12-21) struck back in the sixth inning with a single run. MacDonald hit a one-out double to get the inning going before Devin Robson doubled with two outs to chase home MacDonald for the first Saint run of the game.

St. Lawrence tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning to trim the lead to 12-4.  Jeremy Gerringer singled and advanced to second on an error to start the inning. Isaac Lewis singled to put runners on the corners before Ransley Mendez was hit by pitch loading the bases with no outs.

Gerringer scored on a ground out double play before MacDonald ripped a double to score Lewis for the second run of the inning. Reichel followed with a single up the middle to score MacDonald to round out the scoring for the Saints in the inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, the Saints loaded the bases again and came away with two runs. Oscar Acevedo hit a pinch hit double to left centerfield after Mendez was hit by pitch to start the inning putting runners on second and third. With one out, Loondy Lopez walked to load the bases. One run scored on a Robson fielder's choice play and Acevedo later scored on a wild pitch before the Red Dragons recorded the final out.

MacDonald was 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and a run batted in while Reichel was 3-for-5. Beau Yaremko had a pair of hits and Robson led the Saints with two RBI. Emmett Dunn started and was tagged for the loss while relievers Reichel and Liam Rogers combined to toss three shutout innings late in the game.

The Saints return to action Tuesday at SUNY Canton for a single game starting at 4 pm.
