First-year pitcher
Allie Courtwright allowed just two hits in a complete game shutout win over SUNY Potsdam in the second game of the Saints doubleheader with the Bears on Friday afternoon.
Playing their first games at home this season, the Saints split with Potsdam; dropping game one 1-0, before rebounding for a 5-0 win in the second. Courtwright also helped her own cause in the win going 3-for-3 at the plate and joining
Kylee Knight,
Laura Finley and
Kelsey Murphy with multi-hit games.
Junior
Jordan Sheridan led the Saints with two of St. Lawrence's four hits in the first game, but the team stranded nine runners and couldn't find the answer to a fourth-inning RBI double by Lauren Brace that plated Sami Hubinsky for the game-winning run.
Sophomore
Emma Gailey took the loss in game one, allowing just four hits and striking out eight. Meanwhile, Hubinsky was the winning pitcher for Potsdam. She allowed four hits and walked five with one strikeout in game one.
The second game was all St. Lawrence from the start, as Potsdam went down in order in the top of the first and the Saints tacked on two runs in the bottom of the frame and never looked back.
Knight and Finley both singled to put two on with no one out in the inning, before
Kelsey Murphy's sac bunt moved both runners into scoring positon. First-year
Mylea Mann then drilled a single into the gap in left center to bring Knight and Finley around to score and give St. Lawrence a 2-0 lead.
It remained 2-0 Saints until the bottom of the fifth inning when Courtwright won a lengthy battle with pitcher Meghan Dougherty and put a single to the left side to plate Knight and the team's third run.
After working out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the top of the sixth, the Saints tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the frame to push to the eventual 5-0 margin.
With two outs and
Carly Dziekan on third after a pair of sac bunts, Knight reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and would advance to second; keeping the inning alive and bringing Dziekan around to score for a 4-0 lead.
After Knight moved up to third on a wild pitch in the dirt, Finley earned a check-swing single down the first base line that caught the Bears off guard and allowed Knight to come across as the Scarlet and Brown's fifth and final run of the day.
Potsdam went down in order in the top of the seventh to close it out.
In addition to going 3-for-3 at the plate, Courtwright also struck out four on the mound and issued two walks in the win; her second of the year.
Alissa McCauley took the loss for the Bears as the starter in game two. She went four and a third, allowed seven hits and three runs, with three walks and one strikeout. Dougherty pitched and inning and two-thirds in relief and gave up four hits and two runs for Potsdam.
The Saints were originally scheduled to travel to Alfred on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference doubleheader, but those games have been postponed due to field conditions.
St. Lawrence will now play host to SUNY Canton on Saturday, April 2 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. respectively on the Saints Softball Field.Â
