Two late-inning comebacks helped the St. Lawrence softball team to its first sweep in Florida with a 7-6 win over Oberlin and a 9-5 win over the University of Maine-Farmington on Thursday afternoon. With the wins, St. Lawrence pulled even at 5-5 with two games remaining on spring break.
Kelsey Murphy led the Saints at the plate with a combined five hits and five RBI on the day, while both Emma Gaily and
Allie Courtwright earned wins on the mound for St. Lawrence. Courtwright also earned her first collegiate save against Oberlin.
It was a five-run sixth inning in game one against the Yeowomen that turned the tide for the Saints. After giving up an early run on a single to right center in the second, the Saints added one a piece in their half of the third and fourth on RBI hits by
Emma Reakes and Murphy to take a 2-1 lead.
However, Oberlin would score two in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the sixth St. Lawrence manufactured five runs on four hits and two errors to regain the lead and eventually take game one.
Abrianna Schlickenmayer led off the frame for the Saints and reached on a fielding error by the Yeowomen second baseman and would come around to score after a bunt single by
Carly Dziekan and another Oberlin error on a ball hit in the infield by
Madison Yarborough.
With runners on the corners, Murphy hit an RBI single down the right field line to score Dziekan and
Kylee Knight followed with an RBI fielder's choice to short that brought Yarborough home for the Saint fifth run.
After first-year
Mylea Mann singled to put two runners on, Courtwright jacked a two RBI double to right center, with Knight coming across as the eventual winning running, giving St. Lawrence a 7-3 lead.
Oberlin scored three runs on three hits in the bottom half of the inning to cut its deficit to one run, but went down in order in the bottom of the seventh before finding an equalizer.
In five and two-thirds innings, Gailey allowed 12 hits, six runs (five earned) and struck out five. Courtwright did not allow a hit in her relief appearance and struck out one in one and one-third.
Not unlike the first game, the Saints made a sixth-inning push against Maine-Farmington to erase a three-run deficit and take complete control of the game.
The Beavers opened up a 5-0 lead on six hits and two errors in the bottom of the first inning, but the Saints added one in the second and in the fourth to cut Farmington's lead to 5-2.
Laura Finley led off the top of the sixth for St. Lawrence with a walk before the Beavers recorded a pair of quick outs.
Jordan Sheridan laid down a bunt single just in front of the mound and beat out a throw to put two runners on for Murphy, who doubled to left center to plate both and cut the deficit to one run at 5-4.
Two batters later, with runners on the corners,
Mylea Mann laced a double down the right field line to bring in two more Saints runs and take a 6-5 lead.
Courtwright followed with a hotshot single to third,
Emma Reakes dropped a single behind the bag at third to bring Mann home to score for a 7-5 advantage and a fielder's choice and an error by the Beavers pitcher helped the Saints add two more for the eventual 9-5 margin.
Courtwright went the distance on the mound for St. Lawrence, allowing 15 hits and five runs (three earned) with two strikeouts en route to her first collegiate win.
Due to inclement weather in Florida, the Saints final games of the trip have been moved up as they'll now face Grinnell at 9:00 a.m. at Hancock Park and will finish spring break with a 3:00 p.m. game against the College of St. Benedict.Â
