Saints softball split the opening day of the 2016 season in Florida losing to Lawrence University 8-0 before rebounding with a 4-3 extra-inning win over D'Youville on Saturday night.
Sophomore
Emma Gailey went the distance in game two, allowing eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five in her first win of the season. Sophomore
Kelsey Murphy and first-year
Abrianna Schlickenmayer led the Saints with two hits on the day, while
Jacqueline Dufour has a team-high two RBI.
In game one against Lawrence, the Saints were down 1-0 after two innings and left a runner on base in each of the next four innings. Lawrence scored six in the bottom half of the fifth to push its lead to 7-0 and added another in the sixth for the eventual 8-0 margin.
First-year
Allie Courtwright was the pitcher of record in the loss, going four and a third allowing seven hits and seven runs; four earned. She also rang up two strikeouts. Junior
Hannah Sears came in in relief for one and a third and allowed three hits and Lawrence's final run of the evening.
In game two against D'Youville, Dufour's two RBI single up the middle in the top of the second plated
Elle Gray and
Madison Yarborough for a 2-0 St. Lawrence lead.
The Saints held the 2-0 edge over the Spartans until D'Youville found the tying runs in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra frame. An error, an RBI double, a single and a sac fly manufactured the two runs the Spartans needed to tie it, but St. Lawrence answered with two of its own in the top half of the eighth to clinch its first win of the season.
The international tiebreak rule put
Laura Finley on second base to start the inning and
Mylea Mann led off with a double to center field to bring Finley around for the go-ahead run.
Allie Courtwright followed with a single up the middle that played Mann for the eventual game-winning run to give St. Lawrence a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom half of the frame.
After a lead off sac bunt moved the Spartans' starting runner to third, pitcher Kalie McHenry smacked an RBI double to right center to help her own cause and cut the Saints lead to 4-3, but the next two batters fouled out and grounded out to seal the win for St. Lawrence.
The Saints (1-1) will next face Colby and Oberlin on Sunday, March 20 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m, respectively.Â
