Kyle Kobis scored 16 points, Kyle Edwards had 12 and Dom DeRegis added 11 as the St. Lawrence University Men's Basketball team came back in the second half but dropped a tight 72-68 decision to Skidmore in the Championship game of the Liberty League Tournament Saturday afternoon in Saratoga Springs.
Trailing by nine points at halftime, St. Lawrence (14-12) rallied and took a lead on a DeRegis 3-pointer with 4:21 left to play with the Saints up two at 62-60.
Another DeRegis jumper and a pair of free throws from Edwards gave the Saints a four-point advantage at 66-62 but Skidmore (18-8) rallied for the next six straight points to regain the lead.
Kaleb Faison nailed a pair of free throws tying the score again at 68-68 with 47 seconds on the clock.
Skidmore hit two foul shots to take a 70-68 lead with 26 seconds left.
The Saints moved the ball around in the closing seconds and had a 3-pointer miss the mark and the Thoroughbreds gathered in the rebound with less than 10 seconds left.
Another St. Lawrence foul to stop the clock and two more free throws with three seconds remaining made it a four-point advantage.
St. Lawrence called time out and designed a play for DeRegis to draw a foul on the inbounds play but despite the contact, no foul was called and the clock ran out in the game and in the season for the Saints.
Kieran Miller led the Saints in the first half with nine points but St. Lawrence entered the break with a nine-point deficit at 36-27. After the subpar first half, with the Saints connecting on just 2-of-10 3-pointers, St. Lawrence scored 41 second-half points to put them in position to win the game.
Kobis, Edwards and DeRegis all finished in double-figures for the Saints while Miller finished with nine points. Kobis led the team with five rebounds and Edwards had a team-leading six assists. The Saints were 8-for-16 from 3-point in the second half.
Edwards and Riley Naclerio, who scored a career-high 32 points in the semifinal win over Union, were named to the All-Tournament team for the Saints.
