Saints, Bulldogs Tie 2-2

Saints remain tied with RPI in 6th in ECAC Hockey standings

Playing in an overtime game for the sixth straight week, the St. Lawrence women's hockey team tied Yale 2-2 on Friday night in Appleton Arena to remain tied with Rensselaer in sixth place in the ECAC Hockey standings with one game remaining in the regular season.

The Saints are 0-1-5 in their last six overtime games and carry a record of 14-13-6 and 8-8-6 into tomorrow's finale at Appleton Arena. Yale (10-16-2, 9-102 ECAC) and Cornell are tied in eighth place just one point behind the Saints. St. Lawrence, RPI, Yale and Cornell all have the ability to finish anywhere from sixth to ninth, depending on Saturday's results.

"It's really coming down to the wire," Head Coach Chris Wells said. "It always does in this league. I thought we had some good looks in OT, but just couldn't hit the cage and Hanna Mandl made some great stops in close for Yale in the third to keep it tied."

The team's traded goals in both the first and second periods, with the Saints getting two leads but the Bulldogs battling back to pull even.

Hannah Miller opened the scoring at the 15:28 mark of the opening frame when she took a stretch pass from senior captain Amanda Boulier, deked around a defender on her entry into the Bulldogs zone and then lifted a shot top shelf over netminder Mandl for her tenth of the year. Junior Brooke Webster also assisted on the play.

With just 24 seconds remaining in the period, Yale capitalized on a defensive breakdown by the Saints and entered the zone two-on-one before Jamie Haddad roofed a shot high over the glove of Grace Harrison to tie the game at 1-1.

"The first shift after a goal is so important and Grace made a huge sprawling stop for us after Yale tied the game and then won the draw that kept us from going into the first intermission down a goal," Wells added.

In the opening minute of the middle frame, St. Lawrence regained a one goal lead when a turnaround shot from Justine Reyes deflected off a Yale skate at the side of the net and found its way behind Mandl.

But Yale once again found an answer and pulled even at 2-2 at the 11:07 mark of the period, after Harrison made a series of stops for the Saints, Janelle Ferrara deposited a rebound into the net on the short side for the Bulldogs, forcing overtime.

Shots were officially 2-1 in the extra session, though the Saints had eight looks at goal to Yale's two, but sent shots just wide of Mandl, who finished with 22 saves. Harrison made 21 stops in the tie for St. Lawrence.

The Saints play host to Brown at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Appleton. Immediately following the game the team will honor its nine seniors: Megan Armstrong, Sydney Bell, Amanda Boulier, Kailee Heidersbach, Dominique Korakianitis, Victoria Leimgardt, Jenna Marks, Abbey McRae and Mikaela Thompson.
