Kyle Edwards scored six points in each half to lead the St. Lawrence University Men's Basketball team with 12 points but a shot at the buzzer was off the mark and the Saints dropped a 58-57 decision to Clarkson University Wednesday night in a Liberty League contest at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton.
St. Lawrence (13-10 overall, 9-6 Liberty League) took a three-point lead late in the game as Edwards drained a 3-pointer for a 56-53 Saints lead with 3:21 left to play. Clarkson (9-15, 6-9) cut the lead to a point on a layup less than 30 seconds later but neither team scored again until the :29 second mark in the game.
St. Lawrence missed three free throws during the stretch that would have expanded its lead and a Willie Zachery free throw at the 29-second mark made it a two-point game at 57-55.
Clarkson hit a 3-pointer with eight seconds left to take the lead and St. Lawrence called a time out to draw up a play for the last shot.
Edwards received the pass, turned and fired a tightly contested 3-pointer that was off the mark as the final buzzer sounded.
The score was close in the early part of the first half before Edwards and Kyle Kobis sparked an 8-0 run with Edwards hitting a layup and Kobis connecting on a pair of 3-pointers giving St. Lawrence a 25-17 lead with 6:50 left in the opening half.
Clarkson chipped away at the lead and closed to within a point at 33-32 at halftime.
A 10-2 St. Lawrence run to start the second half gave the Saints their biggest lead at 43-34.
Clarkson battled back again and took a lead at 49-48 with 6:27 left and the teams traded baskets the rest of the way with neither team leading by more than a basket for the final six minutes of action.
Edwards led the way with 12 points while Riley Naclerio added 11 points and Zachery had 10 points and a team-best six rebounds. Edwards led the team with five assists and also had five steals.
