Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong Second Half Not Enough against No. 1 Amherst

Kyle Edwards scored 12 of his team-leading 22 points in the second half while Riley Naclerio and Dom DeRegis each scored 13 points, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team dropped a 90-68 decision to Amherst College in the title game of the Ken Wright Memorial Tournament at Amherst.

Edwards and Naclerio were both named to the All-Tournament team for the Saints (2-1).

The Purple and White (2-0), ranked No. 1 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, shot nearly 60 percent from the field in the first half and built a 49-23 lead at the break.

The Saints outscored Amherst 45-41 in the final 20 minutes but could not overcome the first half deficit.

St. Lawrence battled early in the game and trailed 17-14 midway through the first half, but Amherst went on a 21-4 run to extend the lead to 38-18 with 2:32 left in the period. The Purple and White scored the final three baskets of the half with three straight 3-pointers to build a 26-point halftime lead.

In the second half, Amherst led by as many as 35 points but a late run by the Saints trimmed the lead to 22 as the game's final basket was a jumper by Sam Adler.

Edwards was 8-for-12 from the field, including 4-for-6 from 3-point range despite missing several minutes in the first half after picking up his third foul of the game. Naclerio added a team-best seven rebounds.

The Saints return to action after Thanksgiving, facing SUNY Canton in their home opener next Saturday at 2 p.m. in Burkman Gymnasium.
