Cara Waterson and Meghan Hynes combined for 28 points, accounting for nearly half the offensive output for the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team in an 86-58 loss to SUNY Cortland Saturday on the second day of the Cortaca Classic in Ithaca.
Waterson and Hynes combined for eight of the first 10 points of the game as the Saints (0-2) built and early 10-0 lead in the first two minutes of the contest. Cortland (1-1) came back to score the next 13 point to take a 13-10 lead..
After Jenny Scudder hit a 3-pointer to knot the game at 13-13, the Red Dragons went on a 10-0 run to take a double-digit lead late in the first quarter. Cortland led 28-20 after the first 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Katie Gallagher hit a pair of free throws and Annabella Pugliese made a jumper to trim the lead to 30-24 but a 10-2 Cortland run extended the lead and the Red Dragons led 51-30 at halftime.
The teams played an even third quarter with each scoring 15 points, but Cortland's shooters were hot and outscored the Saints 20-13 in the final 10 minutes.
Hynes led the Saints with 18 points and Waterson added 10 points and a team-leading five rebounds. Kaelyn Kohlasch led the squad with four assists while Gallagher and Ellie Gonyeau each scored seven points for the Saints.
St. Lawrence is off until the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, when the Saints entertain SUNY Plattsburgh in a non-conference doubleheader with the women's game at 6 p.m. followed by an 8 p.m. tipoff for the men's game.
