After a close first half, Hobart College used a 16-0 run early in the second half Friday night to hand the St. Lawrence University Men's Basketball team an 80-69 loss in a Liberty League matchup in Burkman Gymnasium in Canton.
After Hobart (5-7 overall, 1-2 Liberty League) opened up a 20- point lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Kyle Edwards helped lead a comeback for the Saints (6-6, 2-2) and the Saints closed to within five points at 71-66 with 1:38 left to play.
The Statesmen connected on nine free throws in the closing minutes to escape with the victory.
In the first half, Hobart jumped out to an early lead and held a 17-7 advantage thanks in part to three 3-pointers.
The Saints chipped away at the lead and trailed by a single point at 35-34 after a Kykle Kobis layup and an Edwards 3-pointer late in the half trimmed the lead to three points. Hobart scored a late basket to take a 42-37 lead into the intermission.
In the second half, the Statesmen continued to stay hot from beyond the 3-point line and hit four long range shots in the key early run to extend the lead.
Hobart finished the game 15-for-30 from 3-point range as 15 of Hobart's 21 made field goals were 3-pointers.
Edwards was one of four Saints to score in double figures with 10 points while Kobis added a team-best 13, Ben Crawford added 12 and Riley Naclerio added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds Willie Zachery also had seven rebounds and seven points off the bench. Both Zachery and Kobis had four assists each.
The Saints will face RIT at 4 pm Saturday to wrap up the Liberty League weekend.
