After conceding a goal in the 47
th minute, the St. Lawrence women's soccer team scored two goals in the next four minutes to take the lead en route to a 4-1 come-from-behind win over Plattsburgh State in the first game of the North Country Classic Tournament Saturday afternoon.
Emily Depoy,
Kaleigh White,
Rachel Muskin and
Katie Stames each scored for the Saints in the second half, with White's goal standing as the game winner on an unseasonably hot afternoon in Canton.
"While the heat was a factor I really have to praise the team's effort," Head Coach
Franco Bari said. "They played hard the full 90 minutes. We were relentless on defense and creative in the attack."
The Saints controlled the pace for a majority of the game, did not give up a corner kick and outshot the Cardinals 20-4, including a 9-1 advantage in the first half, but Plattsburgh converted on its second shot of the game when Madeline Saccocio sprung Sarah Haight through the Saints back line to take a 1-0 lead.
But the Saints answered just two minutes later on a Depoy penalty kick, which the Saints were awarded after Stames was tripped up deep in the Plattsburgh box. Depoy froze goaltender Nichole Gibson for an easy finish to tie the game.
White gave the Saints the lead for good in the 51
st minute when she used her speed to beat a defender at the edge of the box and went one-on-one with Gibson before sliding it past the sprawling keeper for her second goal of the year.
In the 61
st minute White and Stames connected on a through ball that put White in position to push the lead to 3-1, but her shot was deflected and rolled over the end line for a St. Lawrence corner. Depoy took the kick and played it into the box for a Muskin volley on the six and the team's third goal. The goal is the first collegiate tally for the Madison, Conn. native.
Stames scored the fourth and final goal for St. Lawrence with less than seven minutes to play as she cut through the box to intercept a cross from junior
Katelyn Daley who had made a run down the right touchline. The Plattsburgh defense had shifted to Daley, leaving Stames unmarked on the far side and open for an easy finish for her second goal of the year.
Senior goalkeeper
Kelsey West finished with one save in the win.
The Saints will return to Sandy MacAllaster Field for the final game of the North Country Classic Tournament on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. vs. Marywood University.
