Saints Shutout No. 13 Nazareth in Battle of Unbeatens

The St. Lawrence women's soccer team prevailed over No. 13 Nazareth in a battle of unbeatens Friday afternoon, 1-0,  thanks to a goal by sophomore Katie Stames in the fifth minute; her fifth of the season. With the win, the Saints improve to 6-0-0 on the year, while the Golden Flyers drops to 4-1-1.

"This was a big result for us," Head Coach Franco Bari said. "The defending was outstanding and we generated a pretty strong attack. Nazareth is a very aggressive passing team and I thought we did a great job of absorbing their pressure. I'm proud of our team today. Everyone worked hard."

The Saints got out to a great start and capitalized on a defensive miscue by the Golden Flyers just over four minutes into the game. A Nazareth defended played the ball back to her teammate along the end line, but it was mishandled creating a corner kick opportunity for the Saints, allowing Stames and senior Emily DePoy to cash in for an early lead.

DePoy took the corner and hit a long ball over the hands of Nazareth keeper Allison Dobles to the far post where Stames, as well as a trio of other Saints, were waiting to put it in the net. Stames converted for the game winner.

The Saints were able to keep the Nazareth team at bay for the remaining 85 minutes, while also generating six more scoring chances. St. Lawrence goalkeeper Kelsey West finished with three saves in the contest, while Dobles made six stops for the Golden Flyers.

St. Lawrence will return to Sandy MacAllaster field on Saturday afternoon for a noon contest against Elmira.
