April 17: Despite outscoring Union 5-1 in the second half and pulling within a goal, the St. Lawrence women's lacrosse team failed to find the equalizer, as the Dutchwomen prevailed 10-9 on North Country Field to remain undefeated in conference play.
Additionally, Union improves to 8-3 overall while the Saints fall to 3-9 and 1-5 in Liberty League games.
The Saints finished with 34 shots in the contest and forced Union's Kim Grinhaus to make 15 saves, including nine in the second half with the Saints threatening.
After Union opened up a 9-4 lead in the first half with the help of four unanswered goals and a game-high four goals by Ciara Dudeck, the Saints scored three straight to open the second half and pull within two goals at 9-7.
Junior
Abigail Owens scored her first of two on the day just 1:30 into the second half to swing the momentum to St. Lawrence and sophomore
Kara Hurley scored on a free position shot less than three minutes later to make it 9-6 in favor of the visitors. Â With 18:15 to play
Julia Mitiguy took a pass from
Michaela Maybee from behind the net and buried a hard shot high to cut the deficit to two goals.
Union's Natalie Sullivan responded with her second of the game exactly one minute later to put the Dutchwomen back in front by three goals at 10-7.
Jacqueline Sovie scored with 13:08 to play and Owens tallied a man-up goal with just under three minutes remaining to pull within one, but Union maintained possession in the final two minutes to hold on for the win.
Owens and
Kiera Taussig led the Saints with two goals a piece, while senior
Adden Cunningham finished with eight saves in the loss.
The Saints will celebrate Cunningham and classmates
Danielle Zimmer and
Martha Hamlin with a senior day presentation on North Country Field when they face William Smith at 3:00 p.m.
