April1: Clarkson University came from four goals down in the final 14 minutes to earn its first-ever win over St. Lawrence University13-12 in a Liberty League women's lacrosse game on Hantz Field in Potsdam on Wednesday.
St. Lawrence, which had won 39 straight against Clarkson prior to Wednesday's game, led 12-8 on
Jacqueline Sovie's goal with 14:23 to play in the game, but Christine Wright and Paige Fayette brought Clarkson back. Wright's first goal of the game cut the Saint lead to 12-10 with 8:48 to go and after Taylor Collins made it a 12-11 game with 5:55 to play, Wright scored her second of the day with 1:02 to play on a free position shot to tie the game at 12-12. Fayette then won the draw and scored her fifth of the game on a free position shot with 28 seconds left for the game winner. Clarkson improved to 7-2 on the season and is now 2-1 in league play.
The Saints, 2-7 on the season and 0-3 in Liberty League play, trailed 2-0 early, but came back to take a 4-3 lead on
Chloe Knapp's third of the game with 16:16 left in the first half.
Kiera Taussig scored two goals 33 seconds apart to give the Saints an 8-5 halftime lead.
Taussig led the Saints with four goals and Knapp had three goals and an assist.
Kara Hurley,
Abigail Owens and
Kayla Schmalz joined Sovie with single goals while
Michaela Maybee had a goal and an assist.
Addie Cunningham made six saves for the Saints while Clarkson goalie Dani Tani had 10 saves.
St. Lawrence outshot Clarkson 28-20 and won 14 of 27 draws. Clarkson had 12 turnovers to seven for the Saints while Clarkson had 18 ground balls and the Saints 11. Both teams had five free position shots.
The Saints are now off until April 10-11 when they host Skidmore and Rensselaer in a Liberty League set.
