Chloe Knapp scored four goals and set up two others as St. Lawrence University's women's lacrosse team stopped a four-game losing streak with a 15-11 win over SUNY Potsdam in Potsdam on Wednesday.
The Saints, now 2-4, held an 8-7 lead at halftime as
Hayden Stein snapped a 7-7 tie with a goal with 3:26 to go in the first half. The Bears, 1-5, battled back to tie the game in the first seven minutes of the second half at 9-9, but
Kayla Schmalz scored from Knapp to make it a 10-9 game and Stein and
Julia Mitiguy scored back to back goals to give the Saints a 13-10 lead.
Potsdam cut the lead to 13-11, but Schmalz and
Kiera Taussig scored the final two goals of the game to wrap it up for the Saints.
SLU jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game, but Potsdam battled back and stayed close until the Saints opened a three-goal lead with just over eight minutes to play in the game.
Schmalz had three goals, Tausig had two goals and an assist to go with three ground balls and five draw controls and
Michaela Maybee and Stein had two goals each for the Saints. Mitiguy and
Kara Hurley scored single goals for SLU. Bri McCluskey had four goals and two assists for Potsdam.
The Saints finished with a 33-30 edge in shots and a 15-13 advantage in draw controls in addition to being successful on 16 of 20 clears. Potsdam had a 23-21 advantage in ground balls.
Addy Cunningham had 11 saves for the Saints while Devin Olshewske had 12 for Potsdam.
The Saints open Liberty League play with games at Rochester and RIT this weekend.
