March 18: SUNY Fredonia scored three goals in a span of 5:32 of the first half and never looked back en route a 16-5 win over St. Lawrence University in a NCAA Division III women's lacrosse game in Bradenton, FL on Wednesday.
Katie Kleine scored five goals and had seven assists to lead the Blue Devils while Marissa Cussins had four goals and two assists and Audrey Yokopovich added four goals. Kristie Kleine scored the other three Fredonia goals.
Five different players scored for the Saints with
Hayden Stein leading the way with a goal and an assist.
Julia Mitiguy,
Ashley Norris,
Kayla Schmalz and
Michaela Maybee were the other scorers for the Saints.
Katie Kleine and Mitiguy traded goals in the first three minutes and then Fredonia went on its run as each of the Kleines and Cussins scored in the 5:30 span for a 4-1 lead. Cussins scored her second of the game on a free position with 11:33 to go in the half for a 5-1 lead and while Norris scored from Stein to make it 5-2 with 10:49 to go in the half, Fredonia scored the last two of the period for a 7-2 lead at the intermission.
Yokopovich scored two of her four in a 4-1 Fredonia run to start the second half, making it 11-3 and the Blue Devils coasted home from there.
Adden Cunningham made 10 saves for the Saints while Nicole Burrows had 11 stops for Fredonia. Fredonia outshot the Saints 29-21 and each team had 10 draw controls. The Saints had 12 ground balls to Fredonia's 11 and made eight turnovers with Fredonia having five.
The Saints, now 1-3, will play at Geneseo on Saturday.
