Feb. 28: RPI senior Mark McGowan scored on a penalty shot with 6:22 to play in regulation time and the Engineers upset 19
th-ranked St. Lawrence 4-3 in the final regular season ECAC hockey game for both teams on Saturday night.
Â
The Saints, who went into the weekend with second place locked up, were swept on the Capital District trip and will take a 18-13-3 overall mark into the ECAC quarterfinals against a team to be determined March 13-14. RPI, 10-23-3 overall, earned the ninth seed in the upcoming first round and will play at eighth seed Clarkson next weekend.
Â
The Saints were foiled in part by a strong performance by RPI senior goaltender Scott Diebold, who had a number of big saves among his 34 for the game.
Â
The Saints scored the game's first goal for the second straight night, but again fell victim to a comeback.
Â
Gunnar Hughes opened the scoring with his 12
th of the year on a power play stuff in with 49 seconds left in the first period.
Patrick Doherty and
Gavin Bayreuther assisted on the goal which came in a scramble in front of Diebold.
Â
RPI tied it on a goal by freshman defenseman Mike Prapavessis as Prapavessis circled in front and snapped a shot past Saint goalie
Kyle Hayton, who had traffic in front of the crease at 2:30 of the second. The Saints went ahead 2-1 on the first of two goals in the game by defenseman
Eric Sweetman as Sweetman took the puck from
Justin Bruckel and walked in on Diebold, snapping a shot under the crossbar for his third of the year.
Â
Engineer freshman Drew Melanson then scored two goals just 2:07 apart to give RPI a 3-2 lead. Melanson scored his eighth of the year from Bradley Bell on a breakaway as the Saints were caught in a line change at 10:31 and then was credited with his ninth of the year in a power play scramble at 12:38 as the puck was under Hayton and ended up trickling into the net.
Â
Sweetman tied the game at 3-3 at 10:54 of the third as he took a pass from
Brian Ward and launched a rocket from the point which beat Diebold cleanly, but McGowan was awarded the penalty shot just under three minutes later and scored with a shot inside the far post to give RPI the lead.
Â
The Saints pulled Hayton for an extra attacker with just over a minute to go and had some golden chances to pull even again, but could not find the back of the net.
Â
Hayton finished with 26 saves for the Saints who outshot RPI 38-30.
