The St. Lawrence University Football teams scored three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters and posted a 42-21 victory over WPI Saturday in a Liberty League game on Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium in Canton.
Vincenzo Ferraro caught an 8-yard TD pass from Mike Lefflbine 3:30 into the game and St. Lawrence (7-1 Overall, 5-0 Liberty League) added another TD scoring a minute later on a Lefflbine 20-yard run set up by a Leondre Simmon interception.
Before the end of the first quarter, Jake Gnieser added a 17-yard run to push the SLU lead to 21-0.
In the second quarter, the Saints extended the lead as Mitch Gallagher hauled in a 14-yard pass from Lefflbine for a 28-0 advantage.
WPI (5-3, 2-3) jumped on a loose ball in the end zone after a misguided punt snap to make it 28-7 but Austen Lauricella took the ensuing kickoff and raced 97 yards for a TD. The kickoff return for a TD was the first for St. Lawrence since 1999.
With just 28 seconds left in the first half, Simmon caught a 23-yard TD pass for the 42-7 lead. It was the fifth touchdown reception in the last six catches for Simmon.
The only scoring in the second half was in the fourth quarter and by WPI as the Engineers scored midway through the final quarter capping a nine-play drive with a 9-yard TD pass. The Engineers added a late score on a 4-yard run that capped another nine-play drive.
St. Lawrence was able to run out the clock for the win.
Lefflbine finished the day 16-for-25 for 155 yards and three TDs and Maurice Irby led the running game with 52 yards on 14 carries.
Gallagher was the top receiver with six catches and Patrick Bryant led the way with 47 receiving yards.
Defensively, William Garrity led the Saints with 11 tackles, 2 ½ for loss, one interception and one fumble recovery. James Holley-Grisham added four tackles and two interceptions with 93 yards of return and Simmon added a pair of tackles and two more interceptions as the Saints picked off five passes on the day.
