th minute to erase an early deficit to force overtime as the St. Lawrence women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Rensselaer on Friday afternoon in Troy.
"This was a very competitive match," Head Coach
Franco Bari said. "Both teams were very aggressive and I was extremely proud of how we fought back for the equalizer. We moved the ball much better in the second half and defended very well."
RPI took the lead in the 18
th minute when Dali Alarian flicked on a throw from Bethany Hanson to Corey Winslow who beat senior goalkeeper
Kelsey West with a one-time shot from just outside the six.
The Saints outshot the Engineers 8-5 through the first 45 minutes, but still trailed 1-0 at the half.
But White and junior
Lindsay Geier teamed up in the 67
th minute for the equalizer. Geier played a ball through the defense for the breaking Middletown, Mass. native who lobbed a shot over RPI keeper Tori Riopelle for the equalizer.
RPI had a number of chances late in the overtime sessions, including one that hit the post with just seconds remaining but the Saints were able to fend off the attack and come away with the tie.
St. Lawrence finished with a 19-15 edge in shots and 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. West finished with three saves for the Saints, while Riopelle made four stops for the Engineers.
With the draw, St. Lawrence is now 8-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 against Liberty League opponents and Rensselaer is 5-5-5 with a 1-2-2 mark in league play.
The Saints will travel to Union tomorrow afternoon for a 2 p.m. match with the Dutchwomen.
