Kennedy Marchment netted a pair of goals to help the Saints to a 3-1 win over the Minnesota State Mavericks in Mankato, Minn. on Saturday night. With the win, the Saints improve to 9-6-2 on the season, while the Mavericks remain winless at 0-16-1.
In their first game since Dec. 6, St. Lawrence outshot Minnesota State 33-23 and the teams finished even on draws; winning 29 each. Â After a scoreless first period, the Saints scored a pair of goals in the second and added an empty net goal late in the third en route to the win.
"That was a good win for us coming off the break," Head Coach
Chris Wells said. "We had some good efforts all around."
Moore got the Saints on the board in the opening minute of the middle frame with assists going to juniors
Jenna Marks and
Megan Armstrong.
Marchment pushed the lead to 2-0 at the 9:09 mark of the second with the eventual game winner; her team-leading fourth game-winning score of the season. She was assisted on the play by senior
Jacqueline Wand.
The Mavericks' Kathleen Rogan cut the St. Lawrence lead in half when she put one behind first-year netminder
Brooke Wolejko at the 6:50 mark of the third period, but Marchment helped the Saints regain a two-goal lead with an empty net tally set up by linemate
Brooke Webster with 28 seconds to play.
"Wolejko and our defense made some nice saves and little plays at the end of the game to preserve the win," Wells added.Â
The South Windsor, Conn. native picked up her second win between the pipes for St. Lawrence, stopping 22 of the Mavericks 23 shots on Saturday.
Next up for the Saints is the first of a Sunday, Tuesday series with the University of Minnesota. The puck drops for Sunday's matchup with the Gophers at 4:07 p.m. (EST) tomorrow afternoon.Â
