Dalton Paces Saints Past Union, 63-54

Jan. 3: St. Lawrence University sophomore Caroline Dalton recorded her second career 20 point outing on Saturday, leading the Saints women's basketball team to a 63-54 road conference win at Union College in Schenectady, NY.

Dalton's effort helped St. Lawrence to a weekend split, improving to 6-3 (1-1), the same record as the Dutchwomen.  Kara McDuffee had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds, coming up just five assists shy of a triple double, while rookie Cara Waterson added 11 key points off the bench.  Meanwhile, Union had four players in double figures including a game-high 12 points from Jenni Barra.  However, the home team was done in by a 1-for-17 mark (6%) from behind the arc, and lost despite a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint and a 46-42 edge in rebounds.

"We played with much more urgency and intensity today.  We still struggled shooting but our defense was outstanding, and that kept us in the game in the first half," said St. Lawrence head coach Dan Roiger.  "We shot it better in the second, and I thought it was a nice response from the team after yesterday's performance."

The Saints held a 26-23 advantage at halftime, but used an impressive 10-2 run to start the second half and open up a 36-25 lead behind Allison Cady.  Union responded in style with a big run of its own over the next 4:38 to claw back to within a basket at 37-35, but St. Lawrence never gave up the lead and pushed back with several key jumpers from Dalton.  Her shooting helped the Scarlet and Brown build its largest lead of 13 with 1:48 to play en route to the 53-54 Liberty League win.

St. Lawrence will square off with RIT in Rochester, NY next Friday, January 9 at 6:00pm.
