Jan. 10: The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team earned a weekend Liberty League sweep behind a 71-64 victory at William Smith in Geneva, NY.
Caroline Dalton had a team-high 19 points, while
Kara McDuffee piled up another double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
The Saints, now 8-3 (3-1), shot 42% from the floor and committed just 10 turnovers.
Lauren Quattrocchi had another good game distributing the ball with nine points and nine assists. Meanwhile, the Herons fall to 1-9 (0-2) despite committing just seven turnovers and posting 21 second-chance points. Gabrielle Eure led the home team with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Courtney Chase and Ali Pliszka added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
"That was a hard-fought game today. I thought William Smith played well and we needed to make a few more shots and were able to," said St. Lawrence head coach
Dan Roiger. "It was a great weekend to go on the road and get a pair of wins in a really competitive league."
William Smith took an early lead in the first half, but St. Lawrence responded and took a five-point lead after a three by Dalton with 7:50 remaining up 24-19. The two rivals exchanged baskets throughout much of the period, with Chloe Hayter capping the scoring for the Herons to pull her team within four at intermission, 36-32.
St. Lawrence continued to work hard throughout the second half, as
Kaelyn Kohlasch put the visitors ahead by eight, 42-34, early in the second half. The Herons would get within two at 53-51, but each time the home team pushed, St. Lawrence answered with a key basket.
Allison Cady,
Ellie Gonyeau, Dalton and McDuffee each added important buckets down the stretch, helping the Scarlet and Brown avoid an upset and earn the 71-64 win.
St. Lawrence will be in action again on Monday when they face their toughest opponent of the regular season, nationally-ranked No. 3 Amherst. The Saints and Lord Jeffs tip off at 3:00pm.
