Box Score Sept. 24: McGill University scored four third-period goals to spoil the St. Lawrence women's hockey team's first game in Appleton Arena this season, as the Martlets went on to defeat the Saints 7-4.
Unofficially, two of the Saints first-year players tallied their first points as
Amanda McClure finished with a goal and an assist and
Kennedy Marchment also added a goal for the Saints. Additionally, goaltender
Brooke Wolejko saw her first collegiate action. The game is an exhibition, so the stats do not count towards season statistics for either program.
After McGill opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period, junior
Kailee Heidersbach cut the lead in half when she directed a pass from senior
Kayla Raniwsky behind Martlet goaltender Taylor Hough with just over five minutes to play in the middle frame.
Less than 30 seconds later, Leslie Oles push the McGill lead back to two goals, as the Martlets would lead 3-1 heading into the third.
The teams combined for seven goals in the third period, including four within a two-minute span.
Senior
Jessica Hon opened the third period with a breakaway goal on a feed from McClure, but McGill added the next three to push the game out of reach for St. Lawrence.
Marchment and McClure scored back-to-back goals within a minute and 14 seconds of one another midway through the final period, but Hough continued to stonewall the Saints let to hold onto the lead; turning aside 35 of the Saints 39 shots on the day.
Giulia Mazzocchi started the game in goal for St. Lawrence, making 4 saves, while junior
Mikaela Thompson and Wolejko played the second and third periods, respectively. All three Saints netminders combined for 12 saves.
The Saints will officially open the regular season on Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. when they welcome defending national champion and Route 11 rival Clarkson to Appleton Arena for a non-conference matchup.Â
