Appleton Arena

Appleton Arena, a 3,200-seat multi-purpose arena, is the home of the St. Lawrence men's and women's hockey teams. Originally opened in 1951, Appleton Arena is regarded as one of the University’s significant heritage facilities. The arena has seen a number of renovations in its history, but the rink's original wooden bleachers and general ambiance have remained an integral part of the look and feel of the building,

After the completion of the 2018-19 season, Appleton Arena underwent an extensive renovation. The rink opened for practices in January, 2020, and the women's team hosted the first game against Clarkson on January 18, beating the Golden Knights, 1-0.

The most recent renovations include:

  • A new entrance and expanded lobby, widened concourses, and expanded concessions
  • Additional social spaces including the Legends of Appleton Room
  • A broadcast control room for improved live streaming capabilities
  • Expanded press box and coaches boxes
  • New locker rooms, coaches suites and a new athletic training room
  • The Michael “Buddy” Cornacchia ’74 Strength and Conditioning Center
The rink is named for Charles W. Appleton, class of 1897. The primary donor to the original rink was his son, Oliver D. Appleton, Class of 1927. Oliver was married to Elsa Gunnison Appleton, for whom the riding arena is named.  Oliver and Elsa had three children, including two St. Lawrence graduates, Fred ’55 and Charlie ’60. The Charles W. Appleton II Men's Hockey Coach position is named in honor of Charlie ’60.

Appleton Arena also contains locker room spaces for the men's and women's lacrosse teams and the field hockey team, which compete on the adjacent North Country Field.

Ticket information for the St. Lawrence University men's hockey games can be found here. Admission to the women's games is free of charge, thanks to North Country Savings Bank.
