Will Merchant,
Logan Mancuso and
Dylan Babcock all posted second-place finishes to lead the St. Lawrence University men's outdoor track and field team on the first day of the Liberty League Championships at RIT on Friday afternoon.
Merchant, who had qualified for the All-Atlantic Regional Track and Field Conference Championships earlier this season, improved his personal best mark in the javelin by 55 centimeters with a 54.32-meter throw.
Babcock also had a personal best in his second-place performance for the Saints, improving his mark in the hammer throw by 25 centimeters with a toss of 46.17 meters.
Mancuso finished second in the 10,000-meter run, finishing in 32 minutes, 50.25 seconds, while
Evan Page was just over six seconds behind in fourth.
Dadley Ogetii improved his regional qualifying mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, shedding 2.1 seconds off his personal best with a time of 9:42.48 to finish third.
Ian Clough qualified for the finals in both the 100 and the 200. He crossed the finish line in the 100 in 10.70, 0.21 seconds better than his previous best and good for 20th on the NCAA Division III performance list as of press time.
Travis Hamre (200, 400),
Mark Jannini (110 hurdles, 400 hurdles) and
Gordon White (100, 400) also qualified for finals in two events for the Saints, while
Max Lautenberg qualified for the finals in the 110 hurdles and sits in fourth place in the decathlon with five events left.
St. Lawrence is in fourth place in the team standings with 37 points through the first six events. RPI leads the seven-team field with 68 points, with host RIT in second with 52. Ithaca is in third place, just one point ahead of the Saints.
The Liberty League will crown 15 event champions and the team title will be determined tomorrow.
