Saints Hand #1 Trinity First Loss, 5-4

Feb. 13: Lenard Puski won game four of his match with Trinity College's Tom DeMulder 12-10, setting off an on-court celebration as Puski's win gave St. Lawrence University's men's squash team a 5-4 win over the top-ranked Bantams, handing Trinity its first loss of the season.

The Saints, who went into the match ranked fifth nationally nationally finish the regular season with a 14-2 record and are a sure top-four seed in the College Squash Association team nationals. Trinity sustained its first loss of the year and is 18-1 heading into a match at Hamilton College.

Puski's match was the last one going after Amr Khalifa stayed unbeaten at number one with a 3-2 win over Rick Penders, pulling the two teams even at 4-4 in the team match. Puski beat DeMulder 12-10 and 11-6 in the first two games, DeMulder rallied to win game three 11-6 and after an injury time-out for DeMulder and the score tied at 10-10, Puski scored the last two points of the match for the 3-1 individual win and the team upset.

Khalifa won his 10th match of the season, but was pushed beyond three games for the first time as Penders rallied from a 2-0 deficit to knot the match at 2-2. Khalifa won games one and two 11-3, 11-5 before Penders came back with 11-9, 11-9 wins in game three and four. Khalifa won the deciding fifth game 11-9.

The Saints trailed the team match early as Trinity won the first three matches played, but SLU steadily battled back.

Moustafa Bayoumy won by default at two when Michael Craig of Trinity was forced to withdraw due to injury, trailing by one game and down 6-5 in the second. Lockie Munro won 3-1 at seven over Omara Alluadin, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8 and Tim Lasusa won a 3-2 winner at nine over Nku Patrick, coming from 2-1 down. Lasusa won game one 11-7, lost 6-11, 6-11 and then rallied with 11-2 and 11-7 wins for the victory.

Ahmed Bayoumy lost to Juan Vargas 3-2 at three, winning game one 11-8 before Vargas took 11-7 and 12-10 wins. Bayoumy won game four 11-5, but Vargas took the fifth game 11-6. Hussein Elrayes also lost 3-2 at five for the Saints, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7, 7-11, 8-11 to James Evans, Affeeq Ismail beat George Willis 3-1 at six, with Willis winning game one 12-10 and Ismail coming back with 11-9, 11-8, 11-3 wins and Mudit Pant beat Ness Billimoria at nine 3-11, 11-5, 13-11, 6-11, 11-7. The Saints Julian Jervis was a 11-5, 11-7 11-5 winner over Nicholas Giacco in the exhibition at ten.

The Saints will now advance to the team nationals which will be held Feb. 26-28 at Yale for teams ranked one through 16.
