Trinity Tops Saints for Potter Cup Championship

Edgar Zayas went 3-0 at the CSA Team Nationals
Feb. 22: Trinity College was in familiar territory and on home turf for the College Squash Association national championship match against St. Lawrence University on Sunday.

The Bantams, host of the 2015 national tournament, made their 19th consecutive finals in the Potter Cup for the top eight teams in collegiate squash, while the Saints were in the championship match for the first time in program history. While SLU won matches at one and two on Sunday, Trinity took the rest and won its 15th national championship 7-2.

Amr Khalifa, who will be among the favorites in the upcoming individual championships, was a 3-1 winner over Vrishab Kotian of Trinity in a highly competitive match. Kotian won game one 11-6, but Khalifa came back with 11-6, 14-12 and 12-10 wins for one of the two Saint match victories. Freshman Edgar Zayas had the other at two and that one went the full five games. Zayas and Miled Zarazua traded 11-9 wins in games one and two, Zayas won 11-6 in game three, but Zarazua tied it with a 11-9 win in game four. Zayas closed it out 11-5.

Trinity won five of the other seven matches in straight games as Rick Penders beat Ahmed Bayoumy 11-8, 11-7, 11-2 at three, Juan Vargas was a 11-5, 11-4, 11-3 winner over Ibrahim Khan at four, Karan Malik beat Anderson Good 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 at five, Moustafa Hamada was a 11-7, 11-7, 15-13 winner over Duncan Maxwell at seven and Omar Allaiden beat Chris Fernandez 13-11, 11-9, 11-5 at nine.

Hussien Elrayes took James Evans to five games as Evans won game one 11-8, but Elrayes won games two and three 12-10, 11-6 before Evans closed it out with back-to-back 11-7 wins. Lockie Munro also went five in a tight loss against Affeeq Ismail, taking a 2-1 lead 11-8, 7-11, 13-11 before Ismail finished it off with 11-4 and 11-9 wins. Trinity also won the exhibition match at ten as Elroy Leong beat Sebastian Reidelsheimer 11-4, 11-8, 11-4.

The Saints finished their team season with a 15-2 record, best in program history and will finish with the best ranking in program history at two. Both of the losses were to 20-1 Trinity and both were by 7-2 scores.
