Haylei Coolican of the St. Lawrence University women's track and field team advanced to the finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Rochester, N.Y. on Thursday night. The Syracuse native oscillated between third and fifth throughout the second heat, and ultimately finished fifth in 10:50.62 to grab the final time qualifier.
"I went into the race feeling more excited than nervous, which really helped mentally," said Coolican. "I am so grateful that this Nationals is located in Rochester, so close to my hometown, because I was able to have a great support system of coaches, friends, and family. The race itself was super special to be a part of, and things went smoothly. I definitely had my best jumps of the season, and I am really happy to have one more opportunity to represent the Saints on Saturday."
Coolican and the 11 other qualifiers return to the track on Saturday for the final, set to start at 12:45 p.m.
