After helping St. Lawrence to its fourth straight Liberty League title, men's squash players
Ahmed Bayoumy and
Mohamed El Gawarhy have been named the Liberty League player and rookie of the week, respectively.
The seventh-ranked Saints finished the round robin tournament 4-0 with wins over Hobart and No. 4 Rochester on day one and shutout wins against Vassar and Bard on the final day of competition.
Bayoumy was 4-0 at No. 2 in the Liberty League championship matches. His win over Rochester's Ryosei Kobayashi (11-1, 7-11, 13-11, 11-9) sparked the Saints comeback en route to a 5-4 team win. He also beat Hobart's Terrance Rose (12-10, 11-5, 16-14), Vassar's Viraj Nadkami (11-5, 11-5, 11-4) and Bard's Julian Dime (11-1, 11-7, 11-5).
El-Gawarhy won the deciding match at No. 1 in the 5-4 upset win over No. 4 Rochester, beating Mario Yanez Tapia 11-9, 6-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-2 in five games for the win. He was also 4-0 on the weekend for St. Lawrence, with one win via retirement against Vassar. He beat Hobart's Felipe Pantle (11-4, 11-3, 11-3) and Bard's Rhys Nordstrom (11-2, 11-4, 11-3).
The Saints will play three matches on the road this weekend against Amherst, Trinity and Wesleyan before turning their attention to preparing for the CSA Team Nationals.
