While his career as a collegiate hockey player at St. Lawrence was not statistically spectacular, his contributions to the game since graduation have made the name Bill Torrey one of the most recognizable in the sport.
Bill’s reputation as a National Hockey League executive is unsurpassed. He built the New York Islanders into a four-time Stanley Cup Championship team (1980-83) and as president of the Florida Panthers developed that team into a Stanley Cup finalist in just its third season of competition. The winner of the Lester Patrick Trophy for outstanding service to hockey in the United States in 1983, Bill was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame this past year.
He played on the 1953-54, 1954-55 and 1955-56 hockey teams which combined for a 55-13-2 record and made two NCAA appearances. He also earned a position on the golf team as a senior. Bill and teammate Brian McFarlane ’55 were both among the Hockey Hall of Fame inductees in 1996.p
