The co-winner of the Outstanding Senior Male Athlete Award for 1987, Steve Owens was a four-year standout in both football and baseball and has gone on to a highly successful career as a collegiate baseball coach.

  The leading rusher on the football team as both a junior and senior, he was the offensive MVP as a senior after rushing for 845 yards and six touchdowns and piling up another 159 yards and two touchdowns in pass receptions. He rushed for 383 yards and scored six touchdowns in the last four games leading the team to a 3-0-1 finish to his senior season. He ran for 1826 yards and scored 18 touchdowns in his four seasons of football and was also an outstanding kick returner. He earned all conference honors in baseball in three straight seasons, earning All ECAC honors at both short and third base and finished his career with a .349 batting average He earned Most Valuable Player honors for the second time as a senior. He was a District All America, first team all league and was league MVP. He had a streak of 38 straight successful steals spread over three seasons and hit for both power and average. He had one of the outstanding years in program history as a senior, hitting .454 with 39 runs driven in and 44 scored. he finished his career with 127 career runs scored and 104 driven in and was successful on 73 of 80 steals.   

He signed with the Chicago Cubs following graduation and played two years in the minor leagues before embarking on his coaching career. The head coach at Division I Bryant University at the time of induction, he led Cortland to four Division III World Series appearances and has had 13 30-or-more win seasons in his 19-year career which includes three NCAA Division I tournament appearances at LeMoyne. He took a 587-299-1 record into his first season at Bryant. Steve and his wife Catharine are the parents of three children.
