St. Lawrence University Athletics

The all-time winningest college hockey coach with 924 victories in 36 years behind the bench and an NCAA all-time record 19 tournament appearances, Ron Mason’s introduction to collegiate hockey came at St. Lawrence where he was a three-year standout and remains among the all-time leaders in goals and career points.

Mason scored 67 career goals and had 74 assists for 141 points in three varsity seasons at St. Lawrence and was the leading scorer on the 1961-62 team which won the first ECAC Championship and went on to finish fourth in the NCAA tournament. He also led the team in scoring in 1962-63 when the Saints won 20 games for the first time in history and helped the 1960-61 team to the top ranking in the East and a spot in the NCAA championship game for the first time in Saint hockey history. He was a two-time first team All ECAC selection.

He began his coaching career as head coach at Lake Superior State in 1966 and moved to Bowling Green University in 1973-74. He became head coach at Michigan State University in 1979-80 and won seven CCHA regular season titles and ten tournament championships during his Michigan State tenure. He was CCHA Coach of the Year seven times and national coach of the year in 1992. His 1986 Michigan State team was NCAA champion.
