A versatile athlete who helped put St. Lawrence University’s track program on the map, Peter Rice was one of SLU’s first NCAA qualifiers and excelled at every running event from the dash to the quarter mile.
He won conference titles in both the 300 and 600 meters in 1976, setting records in both events, and completed his collegiate career with six indoor records. He was state champion in the outdoor 440 yards in a record time of 50.6 seconds and was the Most Valuable Performer as a sophomore, junior and senior. He was an 11-time ICAC Champion and four-time New York State champion. His 1:11.2 record in winning the 500 in the ICAC indoor meet was the second fastest time in the nation in 1976 and qualified him for the US National Indoor Championship at Madison Square Garden.
A Dean’s List student and the track captain as a senior, he won conference and state titles in the 400 as a junior and helped the Saints to the state title in the mile relay in a state record time. He was an NCAA semifinalist in the 200 and 440 as a senior and just missed All America status in both events. He ran on the record setting 400 meter relay team which ran 42.8 seconds.
