Considered one of the best defensive players to ever don a Saint uniform in three different sports, Nancy Smalley was also named captain in all three sports, two of them twice.

She was captain of the field hockey teams in 1978 and 1979, captain of the ice hockey team in 1979-80 and captain of the lacrosse teams in 1979 and 1980. She led the 1979 field hockey team to fourth in the all-division state tournament and to the Northeastern AIAW tournament and the 1979 lacrosse team to second in the state and to the AIAW nationals.

Also an outstanding student, she was the Freshman Scholar-Athlete Award winner in 1976-77 and named both Senior Scholar-Athlete and Senior Athlete of the Year in 1979-80.

She has been athletic director at the Madeira School in Virginia, president of the Independent Schools Athletic Association and commissioner of the Independent School League.
