St. Lawrence University Athletics

An All America in swimming in 1980, 1981 and 1983, Martha Finch held St. Lawrence records in three events and was the 1983 Most Valuable Swimmer.

She earned All America honors on the 800 free relay team as a freshman and capped her career by earning All America honors in four events, the 50, 100, and 200 butterfly and the 400 medley relay as a senior, She was captain of the swim team as a senior. In addition to swimming, Martha was also an avid runner and held the women's record in the Stillman Foote 10 kilometer road race. She ran in the Ottawa Marathon in 1983 and was in the top 20 for women and started and coached the women's cross country club team in the fall of 1983.

Martha was severely injured when struck by a motorcycle while jogging in November of 1983 after she had qualified for the Boston Marathon. After a lengthy recovery process, she became involved in wheelchair athletics and worked with the Minnesota Head Injury Association until her death in 1993 at age 31.
