St. Lawrence University Athletics

One of the outstanding woman skiers at St. Lawrence in the 1940’s, Loraine Walter Blanchet was named the Most Active Girl in Winter Sports in three of her four years and was one of the first members of the intercollegiate ski team for women.

Captain of the ski team as a junior and senior and a two-time vice president of the Outing Club, she also won a Kate Smith Trophy race at Lake Placid and was a member of the defense line on the field hockey team. She was also a member of the SLU Club, a women’s honorary athletic society. She played four years of field hockey in addition to skiing and was a member of the Winter Carnival Committee for three years. She was one of four field hockey players to earn a blazer as a senior. In addition to a second in downhill at the Middlebury Carnival, other ski highlights included second in the combined at Syracuse.

She was a member of the Le Cercle Jusserand, a French club and was vice president of Der Duetesche Verein, a German club as a senior. Both language clubs required an average of at least 80 for membership.

A resident of Denver, CO, she remains active in skiing and has been involved in many volunteer programs including Le Club Sevigne and the Institute of International Education.
