One of the outstanding two-sport athletes at St. Lawrence in the 1920’s, the late Leo Costello starred as both a halfback on the football team and as a guard in basketball.
A member of the Athletic Advisory Board, the L Club and Kixioc, he captained both sports and was president of the junior class. Playing on teams which were among the highest scoring in the East, he helped the 1925 basketball team to a 15-3 record and the 1926 team to a 11-5 mark which included three one-point losses.
As halfback on the unbeaten 1925 football team which allowed only 18 points, all in one game, he preserved the perfect season by igniting a come-back against RPI with a 70-yard run for a touchdown and a 40-yard pass for another score in a 21-18 win.
He went on to an outstanding coaching career in Port Washington, NY coaching football, basketball and track and winning a number of championships.
