A member of eight All America relay teams, earning All America status in each of her four years on the swim team, Katie Simpson Tortorello was one of the top Saint swimmers and an outstanding student-athlete, earning both the Freshman Scholar-Athlete and Senior Scholar-Athlete awards during her career
She was part of the 200 freestyle relay team which finished third in the nation with a 1:40.35 clocking in 1979 which was the Saint record in that event. During her career she helped relay teams set records in both the 200 and 400 freestyle and 200 and 400 medley relays and qualified for nationals in each of her four seasons. Co-captain of the team as a senior, she qualified for NCAA championships in two events as an individual and helped the 200 medley relay team to a fifth place finish and was fourth in both the 50 and 100 yard breaststroke.
An English major and Dean’s List student, Katie was a member of Kappa Delta Sigma and the Irving Bacheller Society in addition to her athletic exploits.
