A 6-0 center, Kathy Speno '86 was a dominant force on the interior for the women's basketball team. She helped lead St. Lawrence to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1983, leading the team in scoring with 12.8 points per game that season. The Saints finished the year with 18 wins, a record that stood until the 1998-99 season.
She averaged 16.1 points per game in a 14-7 season the following year, and also led the team with 8.8 rebounds per game. Perhaps her most memorable performance came in a double overtime win over Oneonta in which she scored 33 points and grabbed 22 rebounds.
After graduation, Kathy served as an assistant women's basketball coach at St. Lawrence, Princeton, and Central Connecticut University. In 1999, she launched the Speno Personal Fitness Studio in Savannah, Georgia, and she continues to work with clients who range in age from teenagers to octogenarians. She lives in Savannah with her partner, Angela LaPlante.
