A three-time National Champion and seven-time All America in cross country and track, Jukka Tammisuo is one of the outstanding distance runners in St. Lawrence history.
Jukka won back-to-back national championships in the 1500 meter run at the NCAA Division III indoor championships in 1986 and 1987 as the 1987 team finished second by a point in the final team standings. His nearly identical times of 3:51.15 and 3:51.10 remain in the top five in NCAA Division III history. He returned to St. Lawrence following the completion of his degree requirements in the spring of 1987 and completed his cross country eligibility in the fall of 1987, capping a perfect season with SLU’s first NCAA individual cross country championship.
He went undefeated in the 1987 cross country season and added the ICAC championship, a second straight New York State championship and the NCAA regional championship to his already impressive list of conference and state titles in cross country and track. His 24:19.3 win was the second fastest time in NCAA history. He set SLU records in the outdoor 3000 meter steeplechase and the 3,200 meter relay and has four indoor track records.
A college professor and track coach in his native Finland , Jukka was a four-time participant in the World Cross Country Championships and broke Paavo Nurmi’s 2,000 meter record in 1995.
