A four-year member of the St. Lawrence women’s ski team and its captain as a senior, Joanne “Joby” Chequer Pfaff was active in a variety of activities as an undergraduate in addition to athletics.

A member of Pi Beta Phi and Phi Delta Epsilon, she was Associate Editor of the Laurentian as a junior and Managing Editor as a senior. She also participated in riding and field hockey and was active in intramurals, but made her name one of the outstanding woman alpine skiers of her era.

She was second in downhill in the 1950 Western Division Slalom Championship and was fifth in the Alpine Combined (slalom and downhill). She had St. Lawrence’s top finish in the New York State Slalom Championship as a sophomore. As a junior she helped the St. Lawrence women’s team finish fourth in the Western Slalom Championships and was a key finisher as the team finished fourth in the Middlebury College downhill. As a senior and the team captain, she was consistently St. Lawrence’ top alpine scorer and again helped the team to a fourth place finish in the Middlebury Carnival.
