The first St. Lawrence athlete to earn All America honors in both cross country and track, Jim Howard was All America in cross country with a 20 th place finish in 1979 and the following spring finished fourth in the NCAA 1500 meter championship to earn his second All America certificate of the year.
A versatile runner who ran the 800, 1500, and two mile in addition to running cross country, Jim held records in the 800 and 1500 outdoors and the 800, 1500 and two mile indoors at the time of his graduation. As a senior he set the Independent College Athletic Conference 800 record and was also 1500 meter champion. He won the ICAC cross country championship as a senior and finished fourth in the New York State Championship, the highest finish for a St. Lawrence runner to that point in meet history.
Captain of the cross country and track teams as a senior, he was a consistent scorer throughout his four-year career in both sports. He won nine conference individual championships in track and field and anchored championship relay teams. He also held the indoor mile and two mile records during his career.
Formerly a vice president for marketing for New Balance, Jim is now the owner of JTH Consulting.
