St. Lawrence University's only Rhodes Scholar at the time of
his induction, Howard McKinley was a classic example of a scholar-athlete as a
lineman in football and one of the top students in his class.
A native of Brooklyn, he entered St. Lawrence in March of
1946 after outstanding service in World War II as an infantry officer in the
100th Division, 398th Infantry of the 7th
Army. Twice wounded and hospitalized, he earned the Bronze Star, the Silver
Star and two Purple Hearts and his unit earned a Presidential Citation.
He was a tackle on the football team and the manager of the
tennis team as an undergraduate. He was a government major and earned Phi Beta
Kappa honors. He was named St. Lawrence's first Rhodes Scholar in 1949 and
completed a bachelor's degree at Oxford in 1951. He had a successful 30-year
career as a petroleum executive. He and his wife Jean Makray McKinley '49,
retired in London.
