Brigadier General Martin F. Rockmore, USMC (ret.), was a two sport athlete, campus leader and president of his class as an undergraduate, starring in both football and basketball.
Following graduation, fame lay waiting in the remote Solomon Islands. In August, 1944 then Major Rockmore led his Marine Corps battalion against Japanese positions on Cape Gloucester with such bravery and fearlessness that he won a Silver Star.
In 1961, a few years after his retirement, “Rocky” founded the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation to fund college education for the children of deceased Marine veterans of World War II. By 1989 that effort had raised many millions of dollars and had assisted more than 3,500 young people with their educational goals.
