The Outstanding Senior Athlete Award winner for the class of 1972, Gale Knull starred in football and wrestling and was a starter on defense for the lacrosse team as a junior and senior.
Knull, a state wrestling champion and All America football player in high school, went 53-1 as a collegiate wrestler for the Saints and was a three-time ICAC conference champion. He won the Coaches Award as a sophomore and was team captain and Most Valuable wrestler as a senior. He also received the Coaches Award in football as a sophomore and was a three-time MVP in football. He played defense and starred on the man down unit in lacrosse during his junior and senior seasons.
He began his coaching career as freshman wrestling coach at St. Lawrence and went on to become head wrestling coach and freshman football and lacrosse coach at Union College. He also coached wrestling at Saratoga High School and was assistant girls gymnastics coach at Saratoga High School and the Saratoga YMCA. He also coached gymnastics and girls basketball in Kingston and Red Hook.
A retired jewelry store owner, he has also been active in the National Rifle Association and several sportsman’s clubs and associations as well as a variety of community affairs. He received the Schenectady Police Benevolent Association Community Service Award in 1979, the Mid-Hudson Friends of NRA Leadership Award in 2000, the Federation of Dutchess County Fish and Game Clubs Sportsman of the Year Award in 2001. a special Congressional Recognition Award in 2002 and was the Red Hook High School Raiders Sports Club Booster of the Year along with his wife in 2004-05.
