A four year standout in both football and track and president of the L Club as a St. Lawrence undergraduate and the coach of the freshman football team in 1938, Edward Rimkus’ athletic exploits were high-lighted by a gold medal in the Olympic bobsled in 1948.
A native of Schenectady, Rimkus was a standout at tackle and blocking back in football, playing on the 1936 team which upset Cornell, and in the field events in track as a SLU undergraduate.
His whirlwind bobsled career began with a friend convincing him to try it in 1947 and culminated 13 months later in a gold medal in St. Moritz , Switzerland in the 1948 Olympics as a member of the U.S. four-man team. Rimkus was on the team which finished second in the U.S. trials at Lake Placid to earn its way to the Olympics. His team then took the lead after the second heat of the four man finals and held it the rest of the way to earn what has turned out to be America’s last gold medal in the event.
