A Second-Team All-America selection and Hobey Baker Finalist as a senior, Murphy signed a contract with the Calgary Flames and spent two years playing in both the AHL and IHL. He then spent four years playing professional hockey in Europe, with three seasons in Germany and one in Italy.
After retiring from hockey in 2002, Murphy returned to his native Ontario and currently works as a senior financial analyst in the Canadian government. He lives in Ottawa with his wife, Tammy, and their daughters, Addison and Alexa.
