The first coach of St. Lawrence University’s men’s soccer team, Bob Goodwin had a long and distinguished career as a member of the Saint athletic department and included six other sports on his coaching resume prior to his retirement in 1990.
The first St. Lawrence coach to win championships in each of three seasons in a single year, his primary coaching assignments were soccer, in which he won over 200 career games, and track and field in which he coached seven national champions and 40 All Americas during his career.
A veteran of the Korean War and an honors graduate of Springfield College with a master’s degree from Brooklyn College, “Goody” joined the St. Lawrence staff in 1963 as soccer coach and also coached three seasons of men’s lacrosse. Other coaching assignments included women’s skiing, women’s basketball and men’s freshman basketball.
His soccer teams won nine conference championships including six straight from 1973-79 and made two NCAA tournament appearances. His teams won ECAC titles in 1977 and 1978 and made six appearances in that event. He coached four national All Americas in soccer.
