The captain of the 1956-57 hockey team and a player on the 1954-55 and 1955-56 NCAA tournament teams, Bernie McKinnon’s contributions to St. Lawrence and its athletic programs did not stop following his graduation.

A native of Dartmouth, NS, Bernie returned to Canton in 1965 as a graduate assistant in the athletic department and became a full time staff member a year later. He coached a variety of sports between 1966 and his retirement in 1996, freshman men’s ice hockey, varsity men’s ice hockey, freshman soccer, freshman lacrosse, varsity lacrosse, women’s tennis, men’s tennis, women’s ice hockey and women’s soccer.

His hockey teams, freshman, varsity and women’s, amassed 282 wins. He had two NCAA tournament appearances, a New York State championship and a total of 126 wins in women’s soccer and 33 wins and an undefeated season in 1976 in women’s tennis.

He was named Division III College Coach of the Year in New York State Women’s soccer and was presented the Joe Burke Award for outstanding contributions to the sport of women’s ice hockey. His teams won three ECAC Division III women’s hockey titles and his 1994-95 team made it to the ECAC Division I women’s league semifinals.
